Whip It

Bliss (Ellen Page) is just a small town girl living in a lonely world (aka fictional town of Bodeen, Texas) where she is reluctantly following in her mom’s footsteps as a beauty pageant contestant.  Bliss finds her ticket to freedom after she and best friend Pash (Alia Shawkat) check out a Roller Derby event in nearby Austin. She tries out and makes the Hurl Scouts unbeknownst to mom and dad. Thus Babe Ruthless is born.

Marcia Gay Harden plays Bliss aka Babe Ruthless’ sometimes overbearing mother Brooke and the great Daniel Stern (where the hell has he been?) plays her understanding and occasionally hen-pecked dad Earl. The always funny Kristen Wiig (SNL) aka Maggie Mayhem was toned down with a dash of funny. I would not be surprised to see her take on some dramatic roles in the near future. Drew Barrymore aka Smashley Simpson shines in her directorial debut. The movie immediately sucked me in. I was so afraid that I was in for chick flick. Not that there is anything wrong with that. What I got was a fun movie with a warm fuzzy heart and some wicked body checks. By the way, this movie was made in and around Austin, Texas.  We love Austin. Thank you Drew Barrymore!

Speaking of 80’s Christian Metal bands, any movie that features the lead actress wearing a Stryper t-shirt is ok in my book. Well maybe not any movie, but definitely this one.

In conclusion, I recommend this movie and Stryper rulz.
