I like monkeys. This has long been established. I also like movies. Hence this website. So when you take the two and put them together, what could be so bad about that? In the case of Rise of the Planet of the Apes nothing at all, my fine-feathered friends. Rupert Wyatt’s movie-film prequel to 1968′s Planet of the Apes is full of heart, action, and monkeys.
The movie follows Will (James Franco) a brilliant scientist who is in a race against time to perfect a cure for Alzheimer’s disease in order to save his ailing father (John Lithgow). One thing leads to another, he adopts a cute chimpanzee named Caesar, monkeys get smart, and all heck breaks lose . The movie tagline isn’t “apes will rise” for nothing I tells ya!
I wasn’t really expecting to love this movie, but I did. I also didn’t think I’d root for the apes, but I did. The 1968 classic was a brilliant piece of campy sci-fi goodness. This movie is a thoughtful and realistic (CGI instead of people in monkey suits) piece of sci-fi goodness. Speaking of which, in my Jay opinion the CGI may not have been as believable without the great motion capture acting of Andy Serkis (Caesar).
I ain’t saying it was an intellectual film or nothing, but it sure was a fun movie to watch. I also enjoyed the nods to the ’68 flick. I won’t give anything away, but you’ll know it when you see it you damn dirty humans. I hear tell that this may be the first movie in a trilogy of Ape movies. Count me in for that. I’d love to see what happens when apes take over the top of the food chain. They can’t possibly screw up our planet as much as we have. Actually I guess they could, but what the heck. Let the monkeys have a go at it for a while.
And now a song for your listening pleasure.

Apes will rise – too much funny. Haven’t you always wanted a monkey?
